The Iowa High School Athletic Association released preliminary football classifications earlier this week for the 2023 and ’24 seasons, and Greene County remains in Class 2A, barely. The Rams are the largest 2A program with enrollments from Greene County and Paton-Churdan in the shared program being counted, as well as the new socioeconomic formula considering a school district’s free and reduced lunch student percentage. The enrollment number used for classification purposes is 272.04, nearly nine students less than that of South Tama County (Tama) at 280.96. STC is the smallest football program in 3A.

Caden Duncan is the head coach of the Rams and he talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about the preliminary numbers. “I had been telling people that we would be either the smallest 3A or the largest 2A, and that was the case.” When asked about some of the biggest differences in the two classes on the football field, he said, “In many cases it comes down to depth. The number of two-way starters in Class 2A can vary, but we’ve had great success in recent seasons with seven, eight, or even nine, players starting both ways. In 3A, you’ll see some teams completely two-platoon, while others may have a small number of guys starting on both sides of the ball.” Greene County has been in Class 2A the last five seasons with a combined record of 40 wins and 11 losses including 32-9 under Duncan’s leadership. Prior to that, the Rams were 2-16 combined in the last two seasons in 3A.

Duncan expects the Iowa High School Athletic Association to release the district assignments for the  next two seasons in the near future, perhaps next week.
