The application period for some households to receive help with heating bills this winter is open.
New Opportunities Greene County Coordinator Teresa Lansman says disabled individuals or people 60 and older can submit a form to sign up for Low Income Heating Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
“The program is federally funded. So all the money is helping out the families to go straight to the utility bills to help in the time of the higher cost of bills that come up in winter. And especially from what I heard, we’re going to have a nice cold winter, so the money will definitely help try to take off some of the harder months for you.”
Lansman points out that this system also ensures that a household does not have their heating and electricity disconnected through April 1st. Eligible households must be at the 200 percent federal poverty level to qualify. Lansman notes that households that can apply at this time can make an appointment and bring the Social Security cards or driver’s licenses for everyone in the home, along with proof of income for the last 30 days and the most recent gas and electric billing statement.
