The Perry Jayette volleyball team saw its season come to a close last Tuesday in the first round of Regionals, falling to Winterset. The loss wrapped up the year for Perry with a 7–24 record, but first-year head coach Tina Lutterman had plenty to be proud of from her young and determined squad.
The Jayettes hit their stride late in the season, winning five of their final eight matches before postseason play — their best stretch of volleyball all year. Lutterman’s team featured a strong blend of experience and emerging talent, with contributions from both upperclassmen and underclassmen throughout the lineup.
Four seniors anchored Perry’s lineup, playing in every match and providing steady leadership on and off the court. Charity Parnell powered the attack with a team-high 161 kills, closing her career as the Jayettes’ top offensive weapon. Freshman Kate Schuttler made an immediate impact in her debut season, ranking second on the team with 65 kills and showing plenty of promise for the program’s future.
Setting up the offense were the Whelchel sisters, who controlled the tempo for Perry all year. Senior Karagyn Whelchel led the team with 197 assists, while her younger sister Kalley added 107, giving the Jayettes a reliable duo at the setter position.
From the service line, Cheyanne Culp proved to be a spark plug with a team-best 34 aces, while Parnell added 19 to round out a well-balanced attack.
While the season ended sooner than the Jayettes had hoped, Lutterman and her squad laid a strong foundation for the future.
Perry’s 2025 season may have ended in Winterset, but the momentum and experience gained this fall suggest brighter days are ahead for Jayette volleyball.
