Carter Morton of Jefferson, the sixth year senior at the University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls), capped off his final Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships with several pieces of hardware. The 2020 Greene County High School graduate won the heptathlon, the men’s high jump, the men’s long jump, and was second in the men’s pole vault, contributing 38 points to the Panthers’ team total. He also was named the men’s Most Outstanding Athlete and Most Outstanding Field Athlete. He now has nine MVC indoor event titles to his name as well as multiple Outstanding Athlete and Outstanding Field Athlete honors.
Morton won the first six events of the heptathlon, building a lead of nearly 500 points. In the final of the seven events, the 1,000 meters, he finished tenth, but his lead was so large by that point, he still won by 290 points. Morton’s victories in the heptathlon events came in the 60 meter dash, shot put, long jump, high jump, 60 meter hurdles, and the pole vault.
The meet was held on the Indiana State Fairgrounds indoor facility in Indianapolis. The UNI men finished in first place, closely battling Illinois State with the Panthers outscoring the Redbirds 157.5-151.5.
