A Grand Junction man was recently arrested for allegedly drunk driving and causing property damage.

According to court documents, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle that was in the ditch on Oakland Avenue, just south of 222nd Street on August 1st 6:49pm. Court reports show that the driver, 30-year-old Brian Weltzin, had gotten out of his vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby timber area. 

Court documents state that the K-9 Raider was used to track and find Weltzin in the timber. The criminal complaint details that once transported to the law enforcement center, the deputy noticed signs of intoxication from Weltzin, who also admitted to being drunk and consuming alcohol beforehand. Court documents show that Weltzin consented to a Field Sobriety Test, which he subsequently failed and a breath test, with an initial result of a blood alcohol concentration of 0.239, above the legal limit of 0.08. 

Court documents state that a caller from Jefferson reported seeing a vehicle, which the driver was later identified as Weltzin, to have operated on the Raccoon River Valley Trail and caused $1,500 damage to some barrier posts. 

Weltzin was then arrested and charged with a Class D Felony for second degree criminal mischief, an aggravated misdemeanor for his second OWI, a serious misdemeanor for driving with a suspended or revoked license and simple misdemeanors for failure to provide proof of insurance, open container of alcohol, failure to maintain control and prohibited destructive acts on public lands.
