For the first time in almost three decades, an integral component of Greene County has new leadership running its station.
Since its inception in 1997, the Webb House has been a space where middle school students are invited to gather safely together and have fun a couple of times a week during the school year. One man has been the face of the organization, Jim North, who recently retired this past May and the new director is Toni Cunningham.
She is proud of what the Webb House has stood for over the years and the Webb House Board expresses their gratitude for North’s dedication that has led to a solid foundation that she talks about taking into the future.
“My job isn’t to be Jim North. My job is to be inspired by Jim North to continue and add a little bit, maybe, to the huge legacy that he already is for us.”
Joining Cunningham in a new leadership role is Jennifer Powers, who implemented a new online registration for not only the students who want to attend the Webb House, but also for the adult chaperones, in which there must always be adult supervision whenever the Webb House is open.
Powers talks about one new change this year, which is allowing fifth graders to go to the Webb House. She explains the reason behind the change.
“I felt strongly about including all middle schoolers because at our particular middle school we have fifth through eighth and it seems like a great idea to get all of them involved. Also there is a challenge that chaperones don’t necessarily know who is in what grade. So stopping a fifth grader from attending on Friday could be challenging. So let’s just invite them all.”
Cunningham adds that they are always in need of donations including candy bars, pop and chips that the students pay $1 to $1.25, along with other monetary donations that can be made to herself, Powers, any board member, at the Webb House when it is open or inside the front doors to the First United Methodist Church that is across the street.
The Webb House is open Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30pm and Fridays from 7-9pm during the school year and if the Greene County School District is closed, the Webb House is also closed. Click the links below to register for students or chaperones.
