The first home match of the high school volleyball season for the Greene County Rams resulted in a loss in four sets to South Hamilton (Jewell) in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play. The Rams fell to 1-2 in the league and 2-6 overall after the 25-21, 17-25, 15-25, 21-25 loss.
Greene County and SH were in a tight battle in the first set when senior Nadia Fisher came up with three kills in a span of five points to put the Rams up 18-16, Hannah Stein’s kill made it 19-16 and the Rams never gave up the lead the rest of the set.
The Hawks controlled sets two and three, and were leading 19-10 in the fourth when the Rams made it interesting. Greene County climbed to within 19-21 before SH won the set and the match. Coach Donna Carhill thought her team played well in the first set, but errors hurt from then on out. “The team worked hard and never gave up, but we came up short in the final game. We need to work on our serving in particular for our next matches.”
Kenna Marquardt went 13 for 13 serving while Emily Heupel was 16 for 17 with an ace, and Hannah Promes successfully served 10 times in 11 attempts. Promes had 30 assists to go with 13 digs. Megan Durbin had 15 digs and Stein 10. Durbin and Fisher each had nine kills with seven each for Marquardt and Stein.
The Rams play tomorrow in Eldora at the South Hardin Tournament.
