Late Sunday afternoon several inches on snow were piled up all around the Linduska Field track in Jefferson, except for where Greene County girls’ head coach Kelly Simpson had cleared some of the white stuff off of lane one. Some 18 hours later all eight lanes were snow free, thanks to consecutive days of well above normal temperatures. The thermometer reached 65 unofficially in Jefferson on Monday and Greene County boys’ head coach Dean Lansman talked to Raccoon Valley Radio about being able to get on the track for practice. “It’s nice to get out here this early this year. A couple of days ago there were three to four inches of snow on the track, but now it’s all gone! It’s a lot easier on the kids’ legs when we can run on the track rather than hallways or streets. You can get the hurdles set up outside and get some of the actual distances down, and even do a little bit of timing work. It’s a big benefit to get out here on the track.”

Any snow from here on out is either likely to melt upon impact or melt shortly thereafter, barring anything like April 8, 1973, when parts of Iowa received over 20 inches of the white stuff. The Ram coaches and athletes are hoping it’s done snowing for this year and that we’ll have a long stretch of actual spring-like weather, something that was missing much of last season.
