The month of September is recognized as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. Assistant Greene County Public Health Director Donna Sutton advises parents that children should have an eye exam before entering kindergarten.
“It is important for children to get their first eye exam in the early years either pre-school age or upon entering kindergarten. We have a kindergarten clinic every year before children enter kindergarten, so that’s definitely an option in Greene County” says Sutton.
Sutton explains what to look for if your child may need to see an optometrist.
“If they’re having concerns with their eyes they’ll come home from school and say that they can’t see the blackboard. Or you may notice them blinking a lot, or perhaps rubbing their eyes”.
She says children should also continue to have routine checkups every two years.
Sutton says children can go as long as three years before realizing they need glasses.
