Iowa’s Department of Transportation is currently in the works for implementing a new system for updating drivers’ licenses.

Kim Snook, the Director for the Office of Driver Services, says that there could be changes with the current system as early as this upcoming fall.  Changes that would allow drivers from 18 to 65 years old simply renew their licenses online–something which would require a person to be at the DMV once every 10 years.  Snook says, that other states are already taking advantage of this sort of process and that the new system would allow drivers to get electronic reminders of when they need to get their new license and to look at their driving record.

And with less people having to go into the actual DMV, does that mean there will be fewer jobs available?  Snook doesn’t think so. She says DMVs are “currently understaffed” and that more jobs will open up as the new method is put in place.  Many of these new jobs would include working with the paper to electronic filing system.
