A Perry man is in the hospital after a police chase led to a crash and self-inflicted stabbing wounds Saturday.

According to Perry Police Sergeant James Archer, officers attempted to pull over 35 year-old Ndadarakiye Ngoyi of Perry around 12:22pm Saturday after learning the registered owner of the silver 2003 Chrysler Town and County van he was driving had a warrant issued in Dallas County.

Ngoyi then ran a stop sign at the intersection of 18th Street and Iowa Street and continued eastbound on Iowa Street until reaching his apartment complex.  The officer then followed Ngoyi into the parking lot where he continued to try and flee police.  As another officer entered the parking lot, Ngoyi struck his patrol car head on.

According to police, Ngoyi then grabbed a utility knife and began stabbing himself in the neck and abdomen several times.  Officers struck him with a taser gun, at which time he dropped the knife, was removed from his vehicle and detained.  Officers began first aid to try and stop the bleeding.  Ngoyi was then transported via Dallas County Ambulance to the Dallas County Hospital helicopter pad and flown to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. His current condition is not known at this time.

Charges are pending and the Iowa State Patrol has been called to complete the accident information.
