School meals are changing after new federal nutrition requirements.  Perry Schools Superintendent Lynn Ubben says the requirements will help them build on the work they’re already doing to provide healthier food for their students.

One of the new requirements says students have to have at least half a cup of fruits or vegetables on their tray in order for it to count as a full meal.  Otherwise, they will be charged for each individual item.  Ubben says it’s all about giving the student choices and they plan to have several different kinds of fruits and vegetables available for students to choose from.

Ubben says schools are also limited on how much meat and meat alternatives can be offered so portions will be smaller but there will be more fruits and vegetables available to fill out the meals.
