Greene County Rams head volleyball coach Donna Carhill, assistant coaches Rene Baugh and Carly Tiffany-Brown, and the players are preparing for the season opener on August 28 in Jefferson’s middle school gym vs. non-conference opponent Panorama (Panora). This is the first season that players from the East Greene and Jefferson-Scranton districts are playing volleyball together. The students will also be attending classes together on a full-time basis in Jefferson when the 2012-13 school year begins, also on Aug. 23.
Coach Carhill said practices and scrimmages have gone well and progress has been made. “We scrimmaged at Ankeny against some pretty high level competition and I think the pace was a little fast for some of the girls, but I’ve been happy with what I’ve seen.”
This is the first year of five classes of volleyball in Iowa. Greene County is among the larger Class 3A programs and is unranked. The Rams play in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference and one of the league’s members is in the rankings. Nevada is ranked number six in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union preseason volleyball poll for 3A programs.
