The Dallas County Conservation Board is hosting a special event celebrating the area’s first native people next month.
All community members are invited to the Kuehn Conservation Area near Earlham as the people of the place’s First Nations return to share their stories. An arena cut into the tall grass prairies at Kuehn will be created for the event. Members of the Lakota First Nations will share their drums, songs, dances, flute music and stories.
The event is called a Maka Ochante celebration – which is a Lakota term that translates to “a sense of place”.
Lakota Elder Jerome Kills Small says the goal of the event is for people to “come tand inside their stories and experience the memories of the land.
The event takes place Saturday September 8th from 5-9pm.
Anyone with questions can call the Consevation Board at 465-3577.
