Government debt in Iowa has reached a new all-time high.
According to a state report by the Des Moines Register, Iowa’s total debt is more than $14.4 billion. That amounts to roughly $4,700 for each resident.
Compared to last year, the debt total is up 4.4 percent and nearly 40 percent more than five years ago.
Locally, Dallas County has a total of $206,777,000 in governmental debt, Greene County cities and schools have a total debt of $12,571,000 and Guthrie County’s government debt amounts to $32,713,000.
The local entity with the most debt is the Waukee School District. They account for more than one-third of Dallas County’s debt total at $112,790.
In Greene County, the city of Jefferson has the most debt at $6,702,000 and the city of Panora has the most debt in Guthrie County at $12,639,000.
