Anyone living in Iowa knows that it’s difficult to predict weather conditions during the holidays; but, this is Iowa and throughout the years we’ve experienced everything from calm conditions to full-blown blizzards.
With all the warm weather we’re currently experiencing, no one wants to think about winter weather driving conditions. Stuart Chief of Police Dave Reha encourages all people planning to travel this time of year to be prepared before the storm strikes. There are tips to help you cope better with various seasonal weather hazards. However, as we all know, many of these conditions can occur at any time of the year.
It’s always important to plan your travel and check the latest weather reports to avoid the storm. Vehicles should be winterized and equipped with a winter storm survival kit including items such as blankets, a flashlight, first aid kit, extra clothing, shovel and non-perishable food. Gas tanks should also be kept full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines. Avoid traveling alone. Let someone know your timetable and primary and alternate routes.
A major winter storm can last for several days and be accompanied by high winds, freezing rain or sleet, heavy snowfall and cold temperatures. Chief Reha says there may be a possibility that you will become quickly disoriented in wind-driven snow and cold and strongly suggests that you stay in your vehicle.
