The United States Postal Inspection Service is offering an award of up to $500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the theft of mail in Adair County, on December 6th
The Adair County Sheriff’s Office was notified that mail was being removed from rural mailboxes in an area stretching from Greenfield northeast to Stuart. Adair County Sheriff Brad Newton says it appears that mail is being taken from the mailbox, sorted through, and what the thieves don’t want is thrown out of the vehicle window onto the road.
Sheriff Newton says he thinks the thieves are looking for holiday type mail that could contain cash or gift cards but it is impossible to know what was taken as neither law enforcement or the post office knows what is inside the envelopes.
The Sheriff’s Office received a tip that the vehicle involved may be a mid- sized white car occupied by 2 younger looking white males. Sheriff Newton encourages residents to try and pick up their mail as soon as possible after it is delivered. Sheriff Newton requests that if anyone observes a vehicle messing around mailboxes please try to get a license plate number, as this would help us more than anything, and contact the Adair County Sheriff’s Office.
If you have any information concerning this crime, you are asked to please contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455 or the Adair County Sheriff’s Department at 641-743-2148.
