The holidays bring together family, friends and food. But for a lot of us, that means big meals and bigger waistlines.
Greene County Medical Center Director of Nutrition Services Amy Becker says that you don’t need to fear foods during the holidays, just take it all in moderation. She tells people that if you overeat during the holiday, that’s okay because the holiday lasts one day, not an entire week. Another tip to help you during your holiday splurge is calorie- banking. Becker explains that if you bank up a few hundred calories during the week, you can eat a little more during a holiday meal.
Most holiday meals are served as a “buffet-style”. Becker urges you to look over your options first before you start piling your plates full of food. Try to make healthy choices and then go for that favorite dessert.
“Stick with more vegetables and just have a few of the things like chips and dip or sweets. If there’s a favorite pie or a favorite cookie, make sure you have room for that, but stalk up on fruits, vegetables and whole grains.”
Another reminder is to exercise after the big holiday meal. Becker points out that exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous or excessive. She suggests that you take a walk with your family. It will allow you to be with family in an active setting, but even just a leisurely stroll will help to burn off calories.
