The holiday statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign continues this week. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is wrapping up a long program to discourage drinking and driving.
The US National Highway Safety Administration initiated the campaign in August and at different times throughout the year, usually around holidays, law enforcement agencies throughout the state put out reminders about safe and sober driving. In December, the NHSA reports that 25 people die per day due to drunk driving.
Jefferson Police Chief Dave Morlan encourages the public to continue to be safe on the roads especially during Christmas time. “During the holiday season, we want to remind everyone to stay safe on the roads and be responsible by not drinking and driving.”
According to the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, in 2011, Iowa experienced 1,341 injuries from alcohol related accidents.
After Christmas, the next “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” segment will be around St. Patrick’s holiday.
