Three Dallas County high school students have been nominated for appointments to the U.S. Military academies for the upcoming school year.
Senator Tom Harkin nominated a total of 38 Iowa students for the Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, Merchant Marine Academy and Military Academy – West Point.
Among them are Kelsey Hofmann from ADM High School who was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy and Merchant Marine Academy. Lawrence Krugler, also a senior at ADM High School has been nominated to the Air Force Academy and Merchant
Marine Academy; and Mackenna Markowski from Waukee High School has been nominated to the U.S. Military Academy.
Harkin says an academy nomination is a great honor because of he intense competition for them across the state. In order for a student to be nominated they need to demonstrate superior leadership, academic and athletic abilities says Harkin. They
must also exhibit the necessary motivation for serving in the demanding role of a career military officer and be of “outstanding moral character”.
Men and women between the ages of 17 and 22 who are interested in pursuing a nomination for the class entering in 2013 should visit Harkin.Senate.Gov after March 1st to fill out an application.
