With less than two months before the vote takes place for reorganization, Jefferson-Scranton school board wants to inform the public about the facts of what will take place.

Jefferson-Scranton Superintendent Tim Christensen says that there are four main points that he wanted to get across to everyone about reorganization.  First that they provide the best educational opportunities to its students.  Another fact for why the school districts need to reorganize is because of declining enrollment numbers.  Christensen says that with higher enrollment numbers, electives and other specialized classes can be kept in the curriculum.

“In doing that, the reorganization having enrollment at an optimum level, really helps us with classes we can offer.  You know, in particular, continuing to offer vocational classes and college classes that’s an important part.”

Other facts that the school districts want to inform the public on are financial incentives.  There is an economical impact for people such as getting money from the state to reorganize, about $600,000 for five years, for the school districts to benefit from.  There is also a tax break for property owners of $400,000 over three years.

Christensen explains that if the vote passes this February, then it won’t take effect until the 2014-15 school year.  He says the reason why it won’t go into effect until then is because the vote must take place before January 1st to be implemented that year.  He comments that they are still two separate school districts, Jefferson-Scranton and East Greene, but they have changed the names of the high school, middle school and intermediate school to Greene County.  The vote will take place  Tuesday, February 5th.
