“Where there’s a gym, there’s a team,” might be an appropriate slogan in Jefferson today. Greene County High School is hosting girls’ basketball scrimmages in nearly every facility in town that has a hoop. Girls’ teams from a wide area will be scrimmaging today from 9 a.m. until noon. Greene County head coach Chad Morton said the Rams will be in the middle school gymnasium for all of their scrimmages this morning. Once the girls are done scrimmaging, the Greene County boys’ basketball team will practice in the middle school gym. The Rams will host a boys’ scrimmage with Denison-Schleswig and West Marshall (State Center) tomorrow.

The Greene County girls are 6-4 overall and 6-2 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. Greene County is tied for second place in the conference with Gilbert and Nevada, two teams the Rams defeated in Jefferson earlier this month. North Polk (Alleman) is the league leader with just one loss in conference play while the Rams, Tigers, and Cubs each have dropped two games within Heart of Iowa Conference action.

Next up for the Greene County teams is a Jan. 4 girl/boy doubleheader in Jefferson at the middle school gym vs. Saydel (Des Moines). The Eagles are in their first season as Heart of Iowa Conference members. The girls tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys starting around 7:30 p.m. Coverage on KGRA, 98.9 FM begins at 5:45 p.m.
