When the annual Jefferson-Scranton football coaching clinic is held this weekend in Jefferson, the presenters will join a long list of well known football names. From its start in the mid 1970’s to today, a number of the college game’s top coaches have presented at the clinic. That list includes Ohio State legend Woody Hayes, who was in Jefferson in 1977. Former Florida State coaching legend Bobby Bowden was at the 1981 clinic, while current ESPN analyst and former Indiana coach Lee Corso spoke at the 1980 clinic.

Mouse Davis of the Detroit Lions of the NFL is credited with founding the “run and shoot” offense. Davis was in Jefferson for the 1990 clinic. Former Air Force Academy coach Fisher DeBerry was also here in 1990. DeBerry was credited with resurrecting the Air Force program with the “wishbone” offense. Former Hawkeye great Hayden Fry talked about Designing Successful Pass Plays in 1979, and former Iowa running back and Northwestern University and Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green spoke in Jefferson in 1983. Don James of the Washington Huskies was here in 1984, just two years after his team beat Hayden Fry’s Hawkeyes in the Rose Bowl. Kansas State coach Bill Snyder has spoken at the clinic three different times. Former Wisconsin coach and current Badger’s athletic director Barry Alvarez spoke here in 1984 and ’89 when he was an assistant at Iowa and Notre Dame, respectively.

Former Iowa State coaches Donnie Duncan, Jim Criner, Jim Walden, Dan McCarney, and current Cyclone coach Paul Rhodes have all spoken here. Current Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is the headliner this Saturday at Greene County High School at 10:30 a.m.

In addition to the coaches, NFL Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers appeared at the clinic here in 1976.
