In light of Thursday’s announcement from Hy-Vee, Incorporated officials about their plans to build a supermarket in Jefferson, there have been more details released.

Jefferson City Administrator Mike Palmer says that now that Hy-Vee has made their announcement about potentially building a new location in town, they have been added to Tuesday night’s city council agenda to make an initial presentation to the council and apply for the property at North Vine and Adams to be rezoned.

Palmer states that part of the property is already zoned as central business district and other parts that Hy-Vee is acquiring is zoned as multi-family residential.  Hy-Vee has applied to get that changed to central business district to go forward with its plans.

Palmer points out two key areas of positive impacts.  The first being substantial property tax revenue and the second is the public’s need for Sunday shopping.

“Not taking away from any other locations.  It’s a need we’ve constantly heard at the city is for availability for Sunday shopping.  We see a lot of people leaving town to do their shopping on a Sunday.  This will retain that.”

He says the public can expect representatives from Hy-Vee to be at every city council meeting until the project is approved and construction is complete.
