The Guthrie Center School Board met early last week and the biggest item discussed on the agenda was the approval of the new start date resolution, stating that, Iowa school districts and nonpublic schools may request a first day of school earlier than the original. The board, decided that the school year will be slated to start August 19th, otherwise education could not start until after labor day. The board stated that the later start date would have a negative educational impact on the students.

Other reasons as to why this early start date would be necessary: is to avoid school continuing into mid-June when learning is less likely, secondly, to prep high-school students for their college educations and finally to facilitate their calendars with other districts.
