As spring begins and the weather gets warmer, there will be more people outside walking and enjoying outdoor activities which can create more challenges for drivers on the road.

Jefferson Police Chief Dave Morlan gives safety reminders to pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists and skateboarders.

For pedestrians, Chief Morlan says the safest place is the sidewalks but if they are walking on a busy street, it is best to walk facing traffic so they can see what’s coming up and easily maneuver to get out of the way if they have to.  It is also good to wear light colored clothing during the day and at night, wearing fluorescent colors and a reflective armband will make it easier for motorist to see pedestrians.

Chief Morlan states that for bicyclists and motorcyclists, traffic laws apply to them the same as a motor-vehicle.  They should be riding with traffic and always be predictable such as signaling your turns.  Chief Morlan stresses that the most important piece of equipment for bicyclists and motorcyclists is wearing a helmet.

Skateboarders, Chief Morlan notes, that they should wear a helmet along with knee and elbow pads.  If they are going to do tricks, the safest place is Jefferson’s skate park on East Lincoln Way where they are safe from traffic and won’t destroy property.

As for motor-vehicle drivers, Chief Morlan comments that they should stay alert especially during spring time.

“Be aware that this time of the year the spring and the fall, the sun is in your eyes more and it’s more difficult to see, early in the morning or late at night.  Be prepared to stop if you need to to avoid a hazard.”

If you take these precautions, everyone can stay safe and enjoy the spring and summer months.
