May Day is a holiday that has been forgotten in the minds of newer generations, this was once
rich tradition that served to let the community know that spring had finally arrived.

West Central Valley High School Secretary, Deb Doherty remembers the days when May
Day was celebrated with a May Dance around a pole, where the girls would wear different
colored pastel dresses and they would decorate the pole with ribbons as they danced and un-
danced around it.

She goes on to say that, she would fill baskets with miscellaneous candies, such as popcorn,
licorice, m&m’s, jelly beans and other treats.

She always had a great feeling of satisfaction that day, for doing something for the elderly, and
it is a tradition that she wishes would come back.
