Lyme Disease can affect us all if we do not take the precautions to protect ourselves.

Judith Wiegg President of the Lyme Disease united Coalition of Iowa, wants the citizens of Guthrie County to enjoy their spring, summer and fall activities while protecting themselves from the dangerous disease.

Weeg says Lyme Disease can be spread by multiple insects, including biting flies, ticks, Keds and mosquitoes.  It can be identified by a distinct bulls eye type rash.

Weeg says if you happen to see a tick on your skin, take a pair of tweezers, grab the tick’s head and pull straight up. She says it is important not to twist the tick, or burn it because that can spread the disease into the skin and into your body.

Some symptoms of early and late stage disease Lyme Disease are flu-like symptoms, muscle pain, seizures and possible death if not treated correctly. Symptoms Weeg knows first hand as the disease has left her in a wheelchair.
