The Greene County baseball team was scheduled to play in consolation action at the Kuemper Catholic baseball tournament vs. Spencer at Carroll Stadium, but that game has been called. The Rams and Tigers both lost first round games on Saturday, but Sunday morning rain made it difficult for tournament officials to get the field ready for play. Greene County head coach Mark Sawhill and the team were at Carroll Stadium when they received word their game would not be held. Tournament officials were hoping to get the field ready for semifinal games later on Sunday. Despite Sunday’s game being called off, the Rams still played seven times from June 17-23.
The Rams lost 8-4 on Saturday to the host Knights, ranked seventh in Class 2A. Kuemper had eight runs, 12 hits, and one errors, while leaving nine runners on base. The Rams had four runs on six hits. They had two errors and left seven on base. Sophomore pitchers Jordan Hostetler and Wesley Tipton each made their varsity pitching debuts on Saturday vs. the Knights. Hostetler threw four innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits and four walks. He struck four batters out. Tipton pitched two innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits. He walked no one and had one strikeout.
Greene County’s biggest hit vs. the perennial power Knights was a three-run double to deep left center field in the fifth inning by sophomore Alex Rasmussen. The ball was nearly caught by the left fielder as it hit off the outfield fence just left of the 358 foot mark. That made the score 5-4 at the time. The first run for the Rams scored on a second inning double play ball. The Rams hit into three ground ball double plays in the contest. Junior right fielder Zack Fouch reached base all three times he was at the plate. Fouch had an infield single and was hit twice by pitches.
Greene County will be trying to end a five game losing streak that has the team at 7-12 on the season when they host CMB (Baxter) on KG98 Monday at around 7:15 p.m. in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference baseball.
