Greene County SheriffAs we’ve previously reported, Greene County experienced a couple of fires last weekend related to dry conditions and materials sparking due to lack of rain.

Sheriff Steve Haupert says in regards to the incident that occurred when someone tried to get out of a ditch, spun the tires which ignited the dry grass around the vehicle causing it to catch fire.  He urges anyone in that type of situation to not run their vehicle but instead offers these helpful tips.

“With the dry conditions, probably don’t want to run it anymore than we have to.  Please call a wrecker (and) let law enforcement know (and) get the vehicle pulled from the area without an engine spark or exhaust spark and try to control the burns that way.”

He also suggests to have water nearby when residents are burning trash to prevent anything else from accidentally catching fire.

Sheriff Haupert wants to remind anyone who is conducting a field control burn on rural land to notify the Law Enforcement Center by calling 386-2136 otherwise if a passerby reports a fire, than the landowner can be cited and fined.
