Students in Perry are heading back to school today, yet some still argue classes should not resume until after the Labor Day holiday.
Superintendent Lynn Ubben says she feels the decision on when to start and end the school year is one that should continue to be made at the local level. She says a lot of districts like to have their first semester completed before Christmas break so that when they come back after the first of the year they are able to start fresh. She says there are also benefits to being in line with most college classes, especially for the high school students.
Those in the tourism industry often argue that they lose business when schools start early, cutting their summer busy seasons short.
Ubben says the district is always looking at options and there is always the possibility for change in the future.
Kindergarten students will start their school year tomorrow and pre-school students will wait until after Labor Day.
