Jefferson Scranton School BoardThe Jefferson-Scranton School Board met last night in its regular monthly session.

District Reading Specialist Julie Neal updated the Board on summer school.  She reported that attendance declined in the last couple of weeks due to the program not being mandated this year, but felt the program overall went really well.  The fourth graders had nine kids which was the highest out of all the grades that attended throughout the summer.

The Board heard updates from all principals.  Elementary Principal Scott Johnson told the Board that there were 30 new kids at the elementary school this year and his biggest concern was lunch and how to get all the kids through the line and eating their meals in the 20-minute lunch period.

Greene County Intermediate Principal Maranda Van Cleave talked about getting 20 parents signed up for a parents advisory committee and another 10 parents signed up for PTO’s at the open house this week.

Greene County Middle School Principal Shawn Zanders reported that they had a severe weather drill for the first day of school and completed it in 4:53.  And that there are 198 students at the middle school.

Greene County High School Principal Brian Phillips said the 1:1 Google Chromebook handout meetings have been going well.  Anyone who missed their designated night may come to a makeup meeting Thursday night at 7:30pm.

During the 2012-13 treasurer’s report, Sid Jones with Home State Bank reported that the district started the year with $729,000 in general funds and ended the year with $14,940,000 for total assets.

The Board also approved several items including the 28E agreement with Woodward-Granger to continue to transport special education students to that school district, all fall sports officials, sports medicine contract with 21st Century Rehab on the condition that if the contract were terminated there would be a prorated refund and purchasing a new competition wrestling mat with a price to be determined.

The Board then discussed having all administrators be at more activities and sporting events at night to cover the activity director’s position until the district can advertise for it in January and having two interim positions for transportation and buildings and grounds positions until a suitable replacement can be found for retiring Mark Kersey’s position.

The main discussion point was about the third and fourth grade students from East Greene combining with Jefferson-Scranton during the school day.

The Board decided to accept both the third and fourth grade students from East Greene to be transported to Jefferson-Scranton and add one more classroom to the fourth graders.
