The Greene County Historical Society is hosting a free event on Sunday at the museum in Jefferson.
The First United Coven of Greene County will feature several local poets reciting their original poetry for free to the public with many women published in a state-wide collection called “Lyrical Iowa”.
One of the founding members, Colleen O’Brien says this is the first time the group has performed their pieces in a public setting since 2003, when the group was established. She describes how important poetry is and how everyone has the ability to express it.
“Course because I am a poet and am involved in it quite a bit, I believe its a necessary thing in our culture. But it’s actually one of the most ancient ways of communicating. It’s a syncinced way of describing things (and) telling tales. I don’t know, there’s something about that to me feeds a soul.”
There will be a 44-page booklet of collections of different poems by local poets for $5 with all proceeds going back to the historical museum.
The “Poetry Out Loud” event begins at 2:30pm and is free and open to the public. O’Brien comments that there will be some refreshments and poetry puzzles on the tables for people to enjoy while listening to local women present their poetry.
