They Perry Community School District is looking into funding options to build safe rooms for their buildings.
Safe rooms are structures built to withstand severe weather emergencies such winds speeds of up to 250 miles per hour.
In order to apply for safe room grants Counties must have a hazard mitigation plan in place, which Dallas County approved earlier this year.
Superintendent Lynn Ubben says right now they’re looking into options as to where the building should be and how much space is needed.
Ubben says a safe room near the middle and high school buildings would have to be one of significant size considering all the students and staff in the buildings plus any area neighbors who may need a safe spot in the wake of a storm.
The school board directed Ubben to continue looking into grant options and further action will be taken at a future meeting.
