Severe thunderstorms made there with through the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area mid-afternoon yesterday.

Storms first entered the Guthrie and Adair County areas just after about 2:30pm and stayed severe until around 4:00.

The National Weather Service reported quarter sized hail, though the primary source of damage appears to have been caused by strong winds.

The Raccoon Valley Radio Severe Weather Action Team had Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator Barry Halling on the air to talk about damage in the area.

“It’s raining really hard, here in Adel we’ve had the lights go out, we’ve probably got two inches of rain, we’ve got trees down, I’m listening to reports from the Adel Fire Department of poles down, those kind of things.  So south of Highway 44 might not be the place to be right now” said Halling.

Adel appears to have been the hardest hit by the storm.  Adel-DeSoto-Minburn schools suspended bus service for the afternoon due to downed power lines and flash flooding.  All parents and guardians were required to pick their students up from the middle school.

MidAmerican Energy reported numerous outages in Dallas County with more than 7,000 customers without power, equal to around 25% of their 28,000 customers, without at 4:30pm.

The National Weather Service has not yet reported official rainfall totals from the storm.
