It took five sets, but the Greene County volleyball team defeated PCM (Monroe) in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play in the middle school gym in Jefferson on Thursday night. Scores were 25-16, 16-25, 25-18, 25-27, 15-12. The Rams improved to 5-4 in matches overall, 2-1 in the conference, and 14-12 in games. PCM is looking for its first HOIAC match victory.
Oddly enough, there was not a single tie in either of the first two games, but game three saw the team tied at 1-2-3-4-5-6-7. The Rams broke away from a 9-9 tie to win by seven points after building the lead to as many as nine points at 20-11. Game four saw Greene County lead 21-17, but the Mustangs came back and out scored the Rams 10-4 down the stretch for the victory. The Rams led all the way in game five, but a 7-2 advantage dwindled to 9-8. Greene County led by four points at 14-10 before putting the game and match away.
Coach Donna Carhill’s Rams go to Huxley on Saturday, Sept. 21 for the Ballard tournament at 9 a.m.
