The Stuart Police Department is disappointed with the level of vandalism that occurred during homecoming celebrations for West Central Valley High School last week.
Sergeant Mile Algreen says the department takes a lot of heat each year for allowing students to “tee-pee” areas of the City of Stuart at reasonable levels, but when other activities get involved, things have to be shut down immediately.
Algreen says the department ended students’ activities at around 10pm Thursday night after complaints started coming in about a number of different incidents. Algreen says eggs were being thrown at cars passing by, trash cans were tipped over, benches were flipped over at Lawbaugh Park and many cans were stolen from the Boy Scouts can drive and dumped in the middle of street intersections.
There were students from other school districts in town, but Algreen says a handful of local individuals were involved in the incidents as well.
Algreen says he feels the department gives the kids an inch to have some fun for Homecoming, but when they take a mile back, the behavior becomes frustrating and unacceptable. He says there isn’t one particular instance that caused Stuart PD to feel that celebrations had crossed the line, but that everything collectively led them to halt the festivities.
Finally, Algreen adds that he wants the students to have fun in future years as they celebrate Homecoming, he just asks that they be respectful of private property and keep off the streets so that all residents remain as safe as possible.
