NationalFirePreventionWeek_LOGOThis week is National Fire Prevention Week and the Jefferson Fire Department is doing its part to help educate everyone of how to prevent fires.

Fire Chief Randy Love says lots of people schedule tours of the fire station and they bring their trucks out to different places for people to see them and educate them about their equipment.

One special thing the firemen do, Love adds, is that they will go to the Jefferson-Scranton Elementary School and talk with the kids about fire safety.  He explains the topics they cover.

“Two of three of us usually go in and have a talk with the kids about what to do if there is smoke in the room as far as staying low; don’t hide in the beds, don’t hide in the closets.  What to do if they find a lighter or matches, the stop-drop-and-roll and go through a lot of that with them.  And then we take them out and show them the truck and spray the hose.”

Love states that providing these programs for younger kids is very important as well as educating everyone about preventing fires.
