According to Jefferson Police records, at 3:11pm on Wednesday, the Jefferson Police Department, Jefferson Fire Department, Greene County Emergency Medical Services and Alliant Energy responded to a gas leak at the home of Mike Mentzer at 505 East Clark Street.

Police Chief Dave Morlan says Hammel Construction was digging in the yard and ruptured a ¾-inch marked gas line.  The local construction company made a locate call to Alliant Energy.

Chief Morlan states as the repair crew was enroute from Carroll, police officers and fire personnel evacuated residents on the north side of Clark Street and the trailer park at 701 North Cedar along with the west side of the 600 block of North Cedar.

When Alliant Energy arrived, they shut power off to the 500 block of Clark Street and contained the natural gas leak.  Chief Morlan comments that no one was injured in the incident and around 3:53pm, residents were allowed back into their homes.

He notes that because a locate call was made, no charges or fines were made.
