Greenfield resident Ray “Bubba” Sorensen completed the first year of his Freedom Rock Tour at the end of September when he painted his tenth and final rock of the year in Sac County, IA.

The idea for initiating the Freedom Rock Tour came out of Sorensen’s love for the state, and it’s his quest to place a painted rock honoring our nation’s military in every county in Iowa.

Sorensen says he doesn’t know how long it will take to complete the tour, he just wants to use it as a means to draw outsiders into his home state.

“I love this state, but we’re not exactly known as a tourist state so it’s kind of fun to be able to add a unique element such as the Freedom Rock to each county so as soon as somebody hits Iowa, they will have a unique Veteran’s monument to visit, and as they continue to travel through the state, they can get a glimpse of what we’ve created as a state.”

Sorensen says he has already had 57 counties sign up to take part in the Freedom Rock Tour, so he’s booked out for a few years.  He will likely begin the 2014 campaign in the little town of Blockton, IA which is located in southwest Taylor County.

No matter where he goes, Sorensen says one of his favorite things about the tour has been interacting with locals in whichever respective community he visits.

“I’m grateful that the communities in Iowa are wanting my artwork, but not just that, that they’re wanting to say thank you to our Veterans, and that they love Iowa as much as me and want to help promote our tourism.”
