An accident involves one person taken to a Des Moines hospital and totals three vehicles in Jefferson yesterday.
Police Chief Dave Morlan says at 3:50pm on Monday, police officers, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, Greene County Emergency Medical Services and the Jefferson Fire Department responded to a three vehicle accident at the intersection of Elm Street and Greenewood Road.
Morlan states that Lois Case, age 71 of Jefferson was traveling northbound on the inside lane of Elm Street when she tried turning left onto Greenewood Road when her 2005 Chevrolet Classic hit 64 year-old Leonard Daniel of Carroll’s blue 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis that was heading south.
After striking Daniel’s Marquis, Case’s vehicle was projected southeast into the path of another northbound vehicle, a 2005 Volkswagen Passat driven by Kirk Kiger, age 47 of Dakota City, Iowa and hit Case’s rear end.
Morlan notes that Case was pinned inside her vehicle and had to be extricated by using the Jaws of Life by the Jefferson Fire Department. Greene County EMS transported all four victims including Daniel’s passenger, Pamela Daniel to the Greene County Medical Center.
Case was later taken to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines by Mercy One helicopter and is in intensive care at this time. All other victims were released from Greene County Medical Center.
Chief Morlan comments that all three vehicles are a total loss and everyone except for Case was wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. The incident remains under investigation.
