As we make our travel plans to get to our holiday destinations, always remember to drive safely on the roads.
Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert reminds everyone that with a chance of snow during the day today, if you’re going to be traveling, take extra time and go at a slower speed if needed, and make sure you have plenty of space between your vehicle and vehicle in front of you.
He suggests that you don’t try to pass another vehicle when its snowing, because visibility might impede on your reaction time and the roads may be slick. If you have to pull over, Haupert adds that you should try to go into a farm field driveway or off onto a side road from the highway and wait until you feel its safe to go back onto the road.
He states that during warmer days, snow and ice melt, but then when the temperature drops or the sun sets, everything can re-freeze, making the roads more difficult to travel on.
“As we know from past experiences here a month or so ago within 10-12 minutes, it can go from a little bit slushy to uh-oh, we’re on our top. So, (I) just want everyone to drive safely, get to mom and dad’s house in safe fashion and have a happy holiday.”
The weather forecast calls for a 70% chance of snow today for Jefferson and Greene County.
