A potentially big road win slipped away from the Greene County girls’ basketball team in Gilbert on Friday night. The Rams lost 40-34 to the Tigers when they were out scored 19-5 in the last quarter including a 9-0 run to end the game. Unranked Gilbert improved to 7-1 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play and 8-2 overall while the Rams fell to 5-2 in the league and 5-3 overall. The Rams are 4-1 at home and 1-2 away from Jefferson.
Greene County trailed 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, but went on a 10-0 run to begin the second period and led 18-9. The Rams were ahead 22-13 at intermission and led by as many as 11 point early in the second half. The Tigers continued to trail until they tied the game at 34-34 with two minutes to go and they took the lead shortly after that.
Paige Hoiberg, daughter of Iowa State University head men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg led the Tigers with 16 points. Kayla Mobley led the Rams with 13 and no other Greene County player scored more than six points.
Greene County plays host to North Polk (Alleman) on Tuesday in the middle school gym in Jefferson. The Rams are 4-0 in conference games at home and that streak will be put to the test by the Class 3A eighth ranked Comets (7-2, 6-1). Twin sisters Miranda and Megan Murphy combine to average 37 points per game for a team averaging 52 points.
KG98 will broadcast the girl/boy doubleheader on Jan. 7 with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. The girls play at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow.
