political partiesThe Iowa caucuses were held on Tuesday night throughout the state.

This year was a little different due to 2014 being a non-presidential election year, but both democrats and republicans in Greene County felt that the caucuses were still important.

Co-chair of the Greene County Democrats Dave Morain says it was all about the issues at their caucus.

“Talked about the environment.  Talked about local businesses and what we as Democrats think our important to our members and then also to share with the public in general to get those issues out there.”

The county is divided into seven precincts with all of them meeting for the Democrats at one location for the caucus in which 13 people participated.  As for the Greene County Republicans, co-chair John Meyer says they had about 40 people at their seven meeting locations in the county but was disappointed with the turnout.

He talks about the importance of having a “grassroots” style of making political changes through having caucuses.

“It is extremely important.  And the reason I say that is that it gets ideas put together from the grassroots and its the start of the whole process that culminates at the state convention.”

Both parties will elect delegates that will represent each precinct at the county convention to be held in March.
