This year’s state legislative session is expected to be shorter than normal after an agreement by House and Senate leadership but State Representative Ralph Watts says he’s not sure that’s in the best interest of Iowans.
“There will be some things we won’t be able to get done with a short session” says Watts.
He says the first week of the session was taken by the Governor and the Supreme Court Justice and the second was shorted by precinct caucuses and harsh weather. He worries that this year might not be as productive as it could have been.
“I’m not in favor of a longer session either but after a while there’s a certain amount of time where you get your bills done and you kind of adjust to that. In a shortened session, right now we’re passed the time where we can file a personal bill and we have to go to a committee chair to file a bill for you in order to get something in the system. So yeah, it hampers the ability of people to try and get some things done with a shortened system like that but we’ll just have to live with it this year.”
Representative Watts says so far nothing has been debated on the House floor. We’ll have more with Watts on today’s Let’s Talk Dallas County during the 9am, noon and 5pm hours on AM 1310 KDLS.
