Greene County lost a pair of road games on Friday night in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference basketball at the new North Polk High School in Alleman. The Comets, ranked seventh in Class 3A, won 63-53 in the girls’ game, and NP took the boys’ contest 73-62. Both games were broadcast on KG98.

The Rams led the girls’ game 32-25 in the third quarter before the Comets put a run of 17 unanswered points on the board to turn the game around. Thirteen points was the biggest lead for NP, now 15-4 overall and 14-2 in HOIAC play. The Rams fell to 9-10 overall and 8-9 in the conference. As they have done throughout their careers, the senior Murphy twins led the way for NP. Miranda had 16 points and Megan added 15. Greene County was led in scoring by the 20 point effort of junior Kayla Mobley. The Rams led 27-20 at halftime, but NP made 10 of 13 shots in third quarter including a pair of three point goals.

The boys game also saw the Comets with a big run of points to turn the game in their favor. The Rams were up 17-16 early in the second quarter before NP scored 16 points in a row to lead 32-17. They upped the lead to as many as 20 points in the third quarter and settled for an 11 point win. NP improved to 8-10 overall and 8-7 in HOIAC play while the Rams have dropped six straight games to fall to 5-13 overall and 4-12 in conference play. Russell Greene led four Comets who scored in double figures with 18 points. Freshman Trey Tucker had the second highest scoring game of his young varsity career with 30 points and junior Landon Braun added 14.

The Greene County girls play at JV/varsity makeup twin bill at Nevada on Monday, Feb. 10. The varsity game will be broadcast on KG98 around 7:15 p.m.

The Greene County boys’ next play on Tuesday, Feb. 11 when they host Saydel (Des Moines) in the middle school gym. Air time on KG98 is approximately 7:15 p.m.
