The Guthrie County Extension & Outreach Office is holding its second Farmer’s Coffee talk of 2014 tomorrow morning at 9am, and ISU Beef Field Specialist Chris Clark will be the guest speaker.
Clark will discuss with area farmers and any attendees three general topics pertaining to beef production: nutrition, traceability and antibiotic use. In relation to antibiotic use specifically, Clark says much of his presentation will address the veterinary feed directive, which he sees as a hot-button topic that will be developing and changing over the next few years.
“Basically we’re looking at trying to regulate a little more tightly the use of antibiotics in the feed, and the whole idea is to minimize drug resistance and to minimize inappropriate use of antibiotics. Ultimately, I think (the feed directive) gonna be a good deal it’s just… it will be change, it will require some paperwork and some hoops to jumb through, but ultimately I do think it is going to be a positive thing.”
The Extension Office invites all area farmers to attend tomorrow’s talk whether they attended the first session back in January or not.
To hear more from Clark as he discusses in more detail what he’ll be talking about during tomorrow’s event, tune-in to today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County on K107 during the 9am, noon and 5pm hours.
