Clel BaudlerThe 2014 legislative session continues to move along, and House District 20 State Representative Clel Baudler says discussions have heated up in recent weeks about Iowa’s academic curriculum standards.

It is a topic that has been intensely debated over the past couple years, as some are in favor of the new Iowa Core standards, while others wish schools had more ability to select their own student curriculum.

So is Iowa Core the way for education to go or not?  Representative Baudler says talks pertaining to that question have grown “nasty” in the legislature, and as of now, he doesn’t lean one way or the other when it comes to Iowa Core.

“I don’t know exactly which is the best way for Iowa kids.  I know we have to have standards, and I don’t just want to teach an agenda, I want to teach them education–thinking for themselves.  So I will be checking that often and studying on that in the weeks to come because I don’t think it is going to go away… and it shouldn’t go away.  We should do the best we can for our kids but we have to do it with common sense.”

Baudler encourages those of his constituents with strong opinions in favor of or against Iowa Core, to voice to him their questions and concerns as he formulates his own stance.
