ADM’s head boys track coach Mike Whisner continues to look forward to the season ahead, which actually begins on Tuesday of next week with the Tigers first indoor meet of 2014.
Before the season officially gets underway though, Coach Whisner explains why he’s got high expectations for his athletes this season, especially returning hurdle star Tate Jensen.
“We finished the year pretty strong last year, and I think we have some pretty good things to look at coming into this year. Probably our top qualifier going into the state last year was Tate Jensen in the high hurdles. He had the number one seed going in and didn’t quite get the job done as far as placing so I’m expecting big things out of him coming back.”
While he didn’t qualify for the finals of the state meet in the 110 meter hurdles, Jensen did have the fourth-best time in the event in Class 3-A last year. His top time was 14.93 seconds.
Other state qualifiers from last year’s track team that will be back competing this year include long distance specialist Kyle Hovey, relay runners Grant Goeden and Kolby Whisner and shot-putter Jesse Bennett.
State cross country qualifier Josh Berger also returns–he was a state alternate on last year’s track team. Colton Wix was also a state alternate for the Tigers and he returns.
For Coach Whisner’s team, replacing sprinter Jordan Grove will be the toughest task this season. Grove had the second-best 100 meter sprint time in the Raccoon River Conference a year ago, trailing only Will Whiton of Perry.
