The forecast shows a warm up this weekend and early next week with high temperatures predicted in the mid-50s Monday but that sudden warm up could also pose some problems.
Perry City Administrator Butch Niebuhr says this winter continues to pose problems for the streets and water departments.
“Hank Schmidt the water superintendent called me wanting to know if I remembered this many service lines being frozen, and I don’t. This winter has been exceptionally hard on those service lines and for those that couldn’t get thawed out, you know they’re not going to be thawed out until the frost is gone” says Niebuhr.
But instead of alleviating the problem, Niebuhr says these spring like temperatures happening so quickly and possibly for a short time could make things worse.
“It’s great to see the 50 degree weather but I actually warn people now because when the frost goes out it actually moves down in the Earth. So if your service line didn’t freeze before actually when it starts warming up and gets to be 30-50 degrees in this next week or so if you’re suspect or have a frozen line I’d let that thing drip or run a little bit to make sure it doesn’t freeze overnight during the non use. Something still to watch out for until that frost is completely out of the ground.”
Anyone who suspects problems with their lines can call the Perry Water Works Department at 465-2562.
